The story behind hivemunk
Hello, I'm Jordan! I'm a data engineer based in Nova Scotia, Canada, and I have a confession. I've spent 20 years in software and 10 of those in ag-tech. I literally build systems that organize data for a living. And I couldn't keep my own hive records straight.
Not because I didn't care. I care a lot. I got into beekeeping through a love of permaculture and sustainable living. I'm the kind of person who thinks a backyard should do more than grow grass. So I got bees. And almost immediately ran into a problem that had nothing to do with the bees themselves.
Beekeeping creates a lot of data. What's happening in each hive. Which boxes are stacked where. How the brood pattern looked. What you saw frame by frame. All of this data matters. It's how you make good decisions for your colonies.
My system was voice memos. I'd narrate my inspections in the field because my hands were full and my gloves were covered in propolis. Then I'd get home, sit down at my computer, and transcribe everything into a spreadsheet. It worked until it didn't. The spreadsheet got unwieldy. Notes from three weeks ago didn't make sense anymore. I'd forget to transcribe altogether and lose an entire inspection's worth of observations.
I realized something: if I can't make this work, then the problem isn't discipline. It's that the right tool doesn't exist.
So I built it.
hivemunk started as the system I needed for my own yard. It's designed around how beekeeping actually works in the field, not how software companies think it should work from a desk. Every feature exists because I ran into the problem myself. Every design decision comes from real dirt-under-the-fingernails experience.

Is there a free trial?
Better than a trial. Manage up to 10 hives with 1 team member, absolutely free. No time limit. No credit card. No catch.
Is this worth it if I only have a few hives?
That's exactly who the free tier is for. Even with a handful of hives, your records get messy faster than you'd expect. hivemunk is free for up to 10 hives, so there's no reason not to try it.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes. Downgrade to the free plan whenever you want. Any hives above the free tier limit become read-only, and you'll need to remove members to fit within the free tier. No penalties, no hassle.
Can't I just use a spreadsheet?
You can. Most beekeepers try. The problem isn't starting a spreadsheet. It's maintaining one. By mid-season, columns don't make sense, rows are half-filled, and the whole thing stops reflecting what's actually in your yard. hivemunk was born because my own spreadsheet fell apart.
What makes hivemunk different from other apps?
I genuinely don't know. I've never downloaded a competing app, and I'd bet some of them are doing great work. But I don't follow competitors. I follow beekeepers. I'm a builder by nature. When something in my own operation didn't work, I didn't search for an answer. I started making one. That's what hivemunk is. My own problems, turned into a tool I hope works for you too.
How many hives can I manage?
There's virtually no limit. hivemunk is built for backyard beekeepers with 10-100 hives and sideliners running 100-1000. If you're running a large-scale migratory operation with 1000+ hives, you may hit some limitations. We're optimizing for operations where detailed, accessible records matter most.
Who is hivemunk NOT for?
hivemunk isn't built for large commercial migratory operations that need logistics and trucking tools. It's also not for beekeepers who are happy with their current system and don't feel the pain of lost records. If your notebook works for you, keep using it. But if you've ever opened a hive and wished you could remember what you saw last time, this is for you.
Can I invite team members or family?
Yes. Add members a la carte for a small monthly fee per person. Everyone shares access to the same data, so no one works your bees blind.
Can I manage multiple apiaries/locations?
As many as you need. Apiaries, processing facilities, overwintering yards, storage locations. All free, all with geospatial tracking.
What hive sizes and configurations do you support?
10-frame, 8-frame, and 5-frame nucs. Mix and match within your operation however you want.
Do you support queen tracking?
Yes. Track which queen is in which hive, her genetics, origin, and lineage through splits. Track queenless status too: queen cells, capped or uncapped, young eggs, or hopelessly queenless. A more comprehensive breeding and lineage system is on the roadmap.
What about AI-powered inspections?
Coming soon. We're building voice-to-data transcription so you can narrate your inspections hands-free and have AI turn your words into structured, frame-level records. All major audio formats will be supported. This feature is currently in development.
Is there a mobile app?
Not yet. hivemunk is currently web-only. A native mobile companion app is on the roadmap, especially for field recording.
Does it work offline?
Not currently. You'll need an internet connection.
What if hivemunk shuts down? What happens to my data?
Fair question for any new product. Your data is yours. We're building data export so you can take everything with you if you ever need to. I'm also building hivemunk to be sustainable, not to chase growth at all costs. This is a product I use myself. I'm not going anywhere.
Is my data secure?
All traffic is encrypted over SSL. We host on major Cloud providers. Your credentials are never stored in our database. We use OAuth and our auth provider handles password security with industry-standard practices. Credit Card data is handled by Stripe.
Do you share data with third parties?
Only what's necessary to deliver hivemunk's features, and always the bare minimum. See Section 4 of our privacy policy in the footer for the full list of partners.
How do I get support or report bugs?
See the 'Chat w/ hivemunk' button in the bottom right corner? That's us. On mobile, it's in the top header. Ask anything.
Is there documentation?
Yes, there's a link in the header. But honestly, most people don't need it. The interface is built to make sense on its own. If something confuses you, that's on us, not you. Let us know.
